SBN Spins Off Effective October 1, 2006

October 1, 2006 – The board of White Dog Cafe Foundation and the board of Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia (SBN) are very pleased to announce that, effective October 1, 2006, SBN has spun off from the White Dog Café Foundation to incorporate as a separate nonprofit organization.

Since it became a formal project in 2002, SBN has operated as a program of White Dog Cafe Foundation (WDCF).  From the beginning, the intention was to spin SBN off as a separate organization once it was ready to stand on its own.  Four years were spent building programs, developing a membership base of local businesses and building organizational capacity for both SBN and WDCF. The SBN spin-off was enthusiastically approved by the SBN Steering Committee on June 13th and by the WDCF Board on June 26th.

”This spin-off development is cause for celebration,” said Judy Wicks, founder and president of White Dog Cafe Foundation and founder and co-chair of the board of SBN. “With this move, we recognize the successful incubation and spin-off of a vibrant, influential organization. Both groups look forward to collaborating on future programming and events,” Judy added.

SBN’s Steering Committee forms the foundation for the SBN board of directors, led by co-chairs Elizabeth Guman and Judy Wicks. Leanne Krueger-Braneky will continue to lead SBN as Executive Director, a position she has held since November 2004.

The mission of the Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia is to help local, independent businesses thrive while they build an economy that values people, planet and prosperity for all.  SBN has over 350 active business members and over 1,000 businesses and individuals have attended educational events in the last two years alone. White Dog Cafe Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to cultivate a Philadelphia regional economy that is inclusive, just, environmentally healthy, and based on local business ownership.  The WDCF helps create, strengthen, and connect locally owned businesses and farms that provide essential human needs to our region; supports minority entrepreneurs in this new economy; and educates the public about the benefits and responsibilities of building a local living economy. As WDCF’s largest program, Fair Food addresses the role of food and agriculture in a healthy local economy by building a humane, sustainable agricultural system. Projects include training family farmers to boost their sales; connecting farmers, distributors, and institutions to increase purchases of local food; connecting family farmers with restaurants and businesses through expert consulting services; operating the Fair Food Farmstand, buying from over 50 family farmers and businesses; coordinating the local Buy Fresh Buy Local campaign to promote local food to the public; and developing local food distribution and processing businesses.
