Employment in Green Goods and Services

The numbers are in!  “In 2010, 3.1 million jobs in the United States were associated with the production of green goods and services, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in March 2012.

Green Goods and Services (GGS) jobs are found in businesses that produce goods and provide services that benefit the environment or conserve natural resources. GGS jobs accounted for 2.4 percent of total employment in 2010. The private sector had 2.3 million GGS jobs and the public sector had 860,300. Manufacturing had 461,800 GGS jobs, the most among any private sector industry.”

Pennsylvania Gets Even More Attractive To Businesses

“With more than 450 significant economic projects involving new site development in 2011, it is clear that Pennsylvania's efforts to make itself attractive to expanding or relocating businesses are paying off. DOE Backs Four New Home Energy Professional Certifications

The Building Performance Institute, Inc. (BPI) is introducing four new home energy professional certifications for the U.S. weatherization and home performance workforce. The voluntary certificates offered by BPI are funded by the Department of Energy and cover the most common job classifications in the home energy upgrade industry: energy auditor, retrofit installer, crew leader, and quality control inspector. Scheduling will begin in May, and BPI will pilot written and field practical exams in June. The results will be used to set passing scores for the national exams. Candidates who take the initial exams and meet passing requirements will be among the first group of professionals to earn these certifications. BPI expects to roll the exams out nationally in the fall of 2012.

EPA, Philadelphia Sign $2 Billion Agreement to Use Green Infrastructure to Manage Flows

“U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lisa Jackson and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, signed an agreement that represents a $2 billion investment in Philadelphia green infrastructure.

EPA will provide technical assistance to Philadelphia--including identifying and promoting higher-performing green infrastructure designs--and join forces in several demonstration projects, including greening a school's gardens and revitalizing a low-income neighborhood with green designs. It also will offer research and technical assistance, help monitor the effectiveness and evaluate the benefits of the program through cooperation on water quality monitoring and modeling work.  The partnership and ensuing administrative consent order would build upon the agreement that Philadelphia reached with the commonwealth of Pennsylvania in June 2011.”

1.8 Megawatt Solar Farm is Among Largest in PA

Aqua’s Pickering Plant is now the site of the 8th largest solar installation in Pennsylvania. “The 1.8 megawatt (MW) DC photovoltaic $6.5 million, 6.5-acre solar farm provides power to the Pickering plant, the company’s largest water treatment facility, serving nearly 500,000 residents of 27 municipalities in Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties.

The solar farm consists of more than 7,500 high-efficiency panels that convert sunlight into useful power, thereby, reducing Aqua’s grid-tied usage by 2.3 million kWh annually resulting in a direct economic benefit of $207,000 per year in energy savings.”

The Brilliant Economics of Green Buildings

“The niche has become mainstream. Anyone who says green buildings, which are certified by third-party verifiers as demonstrating superior environmental performance and resource efficiency, are “boutique” has not been paying attention…

The commercial buildings sector boasts the most explosive growth in green building. In 2010, a third of all new commercial construction was green, amounting to a $54 billion market for commercial green buildings. By 2015, green buildings in the commercial sector are expected to triple, accounting for $120 billion to $145 billion in new construction and $14 billion to $18 billion in major retrofit and renovation projects.”
