“What is the impact economy, and how do I know if I’m part of it?”

Philadelphia’s Minority Enterprise Development Week (MED Week) has celebrated minority enterprises in the region and efforts to grow minority businesses since 1984.

The Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia (SBN) is hosting 2 events as part of the more than 40 MED Week events across the city that will help you grow your business. This event, as with all MED Week events, is framed around learning and networking and is a collaboration with Best for PHL.

This 2-part program features a panel of 3 local WMDBE business owners who will be sharing:

  • What the triple bottom line (people, planet, profit) means to them as a woman, minority, and/or disadvantaged owned business;
  • How they practice that triple bottom line; and
  • How they have grown as a result.

The 3 business owners will be joined by the City of Philadelphia’s Director of Procurement, Trevor Day, who will be talking about the City’s interpretation of the triple bottom line, including setting goals for contracting by “Best Value.”

Our panelists:

  • Liz Brown, Co-CEO at Webjunto
  • Aasit Nanavati, Director of Strategic Partnerships at WeGardn
  • Lou Rodriguez, President and CEO at Rodriguez Consulting

Following the panel discussion moderated by SBN’s Executive Director, Anna Shipp, attendees will be guided through the Best for PHL Challenge. The Challenge is an online tool that helps assess the impact a business has on its workers, community, and the environment. The Best for PHL Challenge was created and revised by B Lab's Standards Advisory Council, a group of independent experts in business, and encourages participating businesses to set goals for continuing to improve their impact.

Participants will gain new insight into their own business practices, learn new vocabulary for talking about their business, and join a community of other entrepreneurs striving to improve their impact.

Best for PHL empowers the region’s businesses to improve their triple bottom line through awareness and connection to resources. At the heart of this initiative are the Best for PHL Challenge workshops where like-minded businesses come together to use a free, confidential tool to measure the social and environmental impact of their business; to set goals for improving that impact, and to get connected with resources to help them to do so.
