SBN Roundtable: Growing with Equity: Philadelphia’s Vision for Inclusive Growth
The Entrepreneurs’ Roundtable is an intentionally intimate monthly members-only issue-based breakfast conversation created to connect local independent businesses, elected officials and other key decision makers in the city, region, and state.
Join SBN as we welcome Sylvie Gallier-Howard, First Deputy for the Department of Commerce, and Eleanor Sharpe, Executive Director of the Philadelphia City Planning Commission to discuss the City’s inclusive growth strategy, “Growing with Equity: Philadelphia’s Vision for Inclusive Growth.” As a values-based business owner, you are the expert in knowing what it means to balance economic growth and equitable development. You have spent time developing and implementing best policies and practices to achieve these goals, and now, you have the opportunity to share your knowledge directly with City leadership. This roundtable will feature an overview of the City’s plan and create space for open dialogue about how the City can continue to prioritize strong equitable growth while ensuring it reaches every neighborhood in Philadelphia.
Our first guest, Sylvie Gallier Howard, is First Deputy for the City of Philadelphia’s Department of Commerce. Prior to this role, she served as Deputy Chief of Staff to the Deputy Mayor for Economic Development during the Nutter Administration. In addition to supporting day-to-day operations, Ms. Gallier Howard’s responsibilities include communications and marketing, policy, international relations, and rolling out new programs. She has spearheaded several priority initiatives, such as the launch of Kiva City Philadelphia, a zero-interest micro-business loan program, and the City’s successful effort to become the first World Heritage City in the U.S. Recently she also played a lead role in developing Philadelphia’s bid to Amazon for the HQ2 search and is spearheading a global identity process to elevate Philadelphia’s brand internationally.
Our second guest, Eleanor Sharpe, is a Deputy in the Department of Planning and Development, responsible for the Division of Planning and Zoning. She oversees the Philadelphia City Planning Commission (PCPC), the Historical Commission, the Art Commission and the Zoning Board of Adjustment. Her oversight includes being the Executive Director of the Planning Commission, where her duties include working with City Council, City Agencies, and civic and community organizations to implement the recommendations of Philadelphia2035, the city’s comprehensive plan; aimed at improving the city’s built environment. Sharpe, has a bachelor of architecture from Howard University and a master’s in city planning from the University of Pennsylvania. Sharpe is a member of the Urban Land Institute, sitting on their Advisory Board as well as their Women Leadership Initiative and Community and Economic Development Councils. She’s also a recent board member of the Independent Charter School. Prior to her position with the City of Philadelphia, Sharpe was Planning Director in the City of New Rochelle, Westchester County, NY.
