Home2021 Excellence in GSI Awards

The Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia’s (SBN) Excellence in GSI Awards is the region’s only award ceremony that recognizes the projects and people that bring the triple bottom line (environmental, social, and economic) benefits of green stormwater infrastructure to life. The ceremony also celebrates all of the project partners that make them possible.

2020 underscored how essential local independent businesses are to our economy and the need for social action and climate action. In the face of challenges, SBN applauds and celebrates our partners and leaders who advance green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) in our region to innovate and grow our local economy.

This year marks not only SBN’s 20th anniversary in empowering and advocating for our local independent business community, but also the 10th anniversary of Philadelphia’s innovative Green City, Clean Waters plan. Green City, Clean Waters has catalyzed public and private investments in green stormwater infrastructure throughout Philadelphia and the region and has established an exemplary model for municipalities across the country. To commemorate this milestone, we are seeking nominations in the “Best of Green City, Clean Waters” and “Innovation” categories dating as early as 2009, the year Green City, Clean Waters was piloted, to today.

SBN recognizes excellence in GSI in the following categories:

  • Public Projects: Projects managed in large part by public agency and/or on public property; this includes municipal, state, and federal.
  • Innovation: Processes, programs, or technology that break new ground by applying information, ingenuity, and initiative to significantly advance GSI impact.
  • Best of Green City, Clean Waters: This award recognizes public or private GSI projects in Philadelphia that exemplify the triple bottom line goals of Green City, Clean Waters. A public online poll will determine the winners for this category.

Winning applications highlight the triple bottom line (environmental, social, and economic) benefits of a green infrastructure approach to stormwater management.

This year’s award ceremony will also feature a keynote address from Andrew Sawyers, Director of the Office of Wastewater Management, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and closing remarks from Randy E. Hayman, Esq., Commissioner and CEO for the Philadelphia Water Department.

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of Philadelphia’s innovative Green City, Clean Waters plan, SBN celebrates past and present public, private, and innovative green stormwater infrastructure projects in Philadelphia. The Best of Green, City Clean Waters award recognizes all public, private, and innovation awards finalists since the plan’s inception in 2011, putting it up to a public online vote to determine the winner.
