Heston Garden represents a vacant lot that was transformed into a public park and    recreational area.  The new park features a rain garden that captures, manages, and stores stormwater runoff from the adjacent roadways. The park also includes a walking path, gazebo, benches, and a vibrant mural. This mural is an outcome of the Philadelphia Water Department’s partnership with the Mural Arts Program  which aims to engage and connect citizens  to the infrastructure projects constructed in their communities  through art and design. Additional improvements included the removal of an existing chain-link fence, replacement of sidewalks around the perimeter of the site, and the installation of ADA compliant curb ramps. The community of Hestonville now has a beautiful centerpiece for the enjoyment of both children and adults.

The local community and the Hestonville Civic Association developed a partnership with PWD, PP&R, the MuralArts Program, and Councilman Jones  over the duration of this project.   PWD held regular meetings to engage community members with the conceptual, planning, and design stages of the project.

Additional partners that were involved in the project included the City’s Department of Public Property, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

PWD and the Hestonville community envisioned an area that would help manage stormwater, be a focal point of the neighborhood, and would support the continual growth and greening of the city. This project accomplished that in spades. Post-construction, the community have become stewards of the park.
