Internship Description

The Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia (SBN) seeks an intern to assist with SBN member programs, with most attention going towards a food waste challenge which will begin in fall 2023. This high-exposure, exciting opportunity offers students interested in working in sustainability, food systems, and food waste reduction a chance for excellent hands-on experience. Through data procurement, data management, member engagement, communications, marketing, assisting with our educational events,site visits, and other staff support, the intern will help local food businesses prepare for and complete a 6-8 month food waste reduction challenge. The position reports to SBN’s Program and Membership Coordinator with additional guidance from the Associate Director and will entail up to 10 hours per week. During the internship, individuals will have opportunities to learn about the organization beyond their specific tasks and receive regular supervision and feedback from members of the SBN team. 

Major Responsibilities: 
  • Help with data procurement and data management for food waste challenge by collecting, organizing, and monitoring participants’ use of compost, food redistribution, and other measurable outcomes. 
  • Help support businesses participating in SBN’s food saver challenge by providing  educational materials, site visits, sending specific updates including sharing their successes for social media, and other support as needed 
  • Help SBN with Food Saver Challenge-related communications in print and digital materials, write and distribute press releases, craft blog entries, social media, and various other communication verticals 
  • Develop graphics via Canva to help promote the food saver challenge.
  • Cull outreach lists and provide database management for email and mail correspondence 
  • Research organizations, business, and community groups in the region to target for future food systems outreach 
  • Assist with the planning and execution of programs related to the food waste challenge
  • Provide administrative support and perform other job-related duties as assigned. 
Qualifications:
  • Interest in SBN’s mission and values, especially in sustainability related to food systems 
  • Familiarity with a customer relationship management system preferred, but not necessary 
  • Knowledge of and experience with customer service, data tracking, and different types of outreach 
  • Great writing and communications skills, especially with social media and other digital channels, experience with customer service
  • Ability to prioritize work, multi-task, and problem solve
  • Proficiency in Google Suite and Microsoft Office is required
  • Basic knowledge of Greater Philadelphia area 

The position will entail 10 hours a week and is based in Philadelphia. Individuals must be able to work both remotely and in-person as SBN staff is on a hybrid working model until further notice. Individuals will receive college credit only.
