Community Engagement Coordinator

Sharing Excess is seeking community leaders who will host weekly food distributions and recruit volunteers. This is a full-time role, with the expectation that 20 hours of the week will be spent running pop-up distributions and 20 hours will be spent working remotely with our Distribution and Operations teams to manage volunteers. These pop-up distributions occur on Saturday and weekday afternoons in central parts of Philadelphia and mimic small farmers’ markets – with the exception that the food is free. As a Community Engagement Coordinator, you will be responsible for the delivery of food, set up and breakdown of the pop-up, and management of a team of volunteers.

This role entails ownership of the entire process of running these pop-up food distributions: 

  • Distributing a variety of free food and having meaningful interactions with community members and interested passerby.
  • Speaking and educating with enthusiasm about the mission and vision of Sharing Excess.
  • Arriving at our distribution sites in a timely manner to organize and set up tables and tents.
  • Working with volunteers to unload the product.
  • Guiding volunteer groups through their shift of distributing food.

The remainder of the role will involve managing recruitment and retention of volunteers, and interfacing regularly with volunteer groups to organize events in the community. We are looking for passionate individuals with a strong interest in community service and working in the nonprofit sector.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring efficient delivery of food and set-up/breakdown of food distribution pop-ups.
  • Management of a team of volunteers every weekend.
  • Loading in pallets of produce and driving our cargo van to and from distribution sites.
  • Organizing and setting up tables and tents at distribution sites.
  • Guiding volunteer groups through their weekend shifts distributing the food.
  • Representing Sharing Excess at these events, answering questions and explaining our mission to community members.
  • Collaborate with Marketing and Distribution teams to attract and maintain volunteer involvement
  • Guide volunteer groups, including students, corporations, and community groups, during distribution shifts.

Qualifications:

  • Strong interest in the nonprofit or community service sector.
  • Experience working in a team setting, especially organizing and managing volunteers.
  • Passion for food justice and ensuring equitable food access in our communities.
  • Resident of Philadelphia and available every Saturday from 11:00AM-3:00PM and an additional 15 hours of weekday IN-PERSON availability (Food Distributions typically happen in West and South Philadelphia with locations subject. The cargo van and initial produce pickup are located in West Philadelphia).
  • Valid driver’s license with no restrictions.
  • Able to comfortably lift up to 40lbs at once.
