Landscape Designer

Studio Sustena seeks a landscape designer with a strong design aesthetic and passion for resilient landscapes to join our growing team.

Studio Sustena is an award-winning, WBE-certified landscape architecture and civil engineering firm based in Philadelphia, PA. We specialize in elegant, inventive landscapes for rooftops and ground-level settings. For more than 25 years, our multi-disciplinary staff has collaborated on concept design through long-term stewardship, resulting in an unparalleled understanding of lifecycle performance. We bring together proven technologies to solve project-specific technical challenges, while emphasizing beauty within socially dynamic, urban spaces.

Our integrated site design process includes Resilient Planting Design. This unique approach combines perennial plants that have complimentary functions within the ecosystem, resulting in enhanced sustainability with an intentional aesthetic, accompanied by a reduced maintenance effort. This planting design approach is distinctive to our studio.

Position Responsibilities

·        Contribute to project design, from initial site visit through construction documentation, under the supervision of a licensed landscape architect. 

·        Generate concepts for site designs and advance them through iterations.

·        Prepare 2D graphics (Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, AutoCAD).

·        Prepare 3D models (SketchUp).

·        Prepare presentations for client meetings (Adobe InDesign).

·        Draft construction drawings and accurately revise based on redlines.

·        Assist with material selection and research.

·        Learn our Resilient Planting Design method and apply it to projects.

·        Attend construction-observation visits with a licensed landscape architect and draft construction-observation reports.

·        Coordinate with team members from other disciplines and assist with project management as needed.

Qualifications

·        Bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in landscape architecture from an accredited program.

·        2-5 Years of office experience in a design firm.

·        Highly collaborative, organized, and internally motivated.

·        Passion for creating innovative, sustainable landscapes.

·        Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, AutoCAD, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel.

·        Proficiency in SketchUp or in another 3D modeling software and commitment to quickly learning SketchUp.

·        Proficiency in written and graphic communications skills to communicate design ideas. Oral presentation skills are a plus.

·        Interest in integrated site design (i.e., collaborating internally with civil engineers).

·        Interest in green stormwater infrastructure, including landscapes on structure (i.e., green roofs).

·        Secondary expertise in a related field (e.g., graphic design, engineering, photography, carpentry, ecology, architecture) is a plus.

·        Familiarity with rating systems for sustainable design (e.g., LEED, SITES, LBC) is a plus.

This position is an exempt (i.e., salaried) 40 or 32 hour/week role that requires 3-days a week in-office.
